Montessori Seguin Boards numbers in French

The Seguin Boards: a Montessori teaching material for the introduction to the decimal system. They allow students to handle the digits, build numbers and understand place value.

OVERVIEW OF THE MATERIAL:

• A board on which the number ten is printed five times, one below the other
• A board the same length as the first, on which the number ten is read four times in a column
• 9 small boards numbered from 1 to 9
• a board on which the numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 are read arranged in a column.
• A second board of the same size with the numbers 60, 70, 80 and 90.
• A box containing nine ten-bars and ten unit beads (not supplied)

PRESENTATION:

1. First step

Only one board and the ten-bars are used, but both boards are placed on the mat.

- Show the ten and ask the child what it is (it is ten), place the ten-bar next to the number

- Show the 20, ask the child what it is (it is twenty) and place two tens, reusing the one placed next to the ten.

- Go up to thirty, then do a three-period lesson. (Can you show me, what is it?) The next time, continue with 40, 50 and 60, then 70, 80 and 90.

2. Second step

The child knows all the tens up to 90; the ten-bars and the beads are used for the units.

- The unit boards are stacked to the right of the boards

- Ask the child if they remember how to make 11

- take the 1 board, slide it next to the ten, then ask them to place the matching number of beads on the left

- When you want to change board, move on to the next one, remove the one just used and place it face down at the bottom of the board

- Stack the used boards as you go

- Invite the child to continue up to 19

- Ask them what comes next: 20. Place the two tens

- Ask them what comes after 20: 21. Take the 1 and place it next to the 2 of twenty and say twenty-one: place the two ten-bars and one bead

- When all the numbers up to ninety-nine have been made, ask the child if they can make, for example, seventy-five, forty-five, twenty-one, thirty-six, etc.
