ANIMAL PUPPETS
CONTENTS
Set of 8 hand puppets + AUDIO CD (no images) with
the complete recording of sound and music for a theatrical performance of 2 stories +
dialogue book (booklet) with the 2 stories. The AUDIO CD lets the teacher
perform the stories without having to speak them: simply play the AUDIO CD and move
the puppets following the booklet's instructions. It's very easy and very practical!
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE AND SETS
In the booklet, all spatial directions are given from the back of the theatre, at the
rear, facing the audience.
This guide suggests a few sets as a basis for the teacher to
build on. The sets are not essential, but they are recommended.
It is also recommended to fix under the theatre window, at the bottom and at the
back, along the base of the window, three blocks of plasticine to which the foreground set
or the characters can be attached at certain moments using a stick. All this
is set out in detail with the stage directions of the stories in the booklet.
To get the most out of the puppets' movements, the best way to hold them
is to put the thumb in one of the arms, the index and middle fingers in the head and the ring and
little fingers in the other arm. The puppets' movements allow many
emotions to be expressed. For example:
- with the arms, you clap, wave, stroke, show joy or
excitement with quick movements, cry while hiding the head with the arms,
etc.
- with the head, you speak, nod, etc.
- with the body, you say no by swaying
It is recommended to read each story in the booklet carefully and to listen to its
performance on the AUDIO CD, and to rehearse the story with the puppets
before staging it.
The performance can also be done without the AUDIO CD, by reading the booklet texts. The
AUDIO CD also includes the music on its own for a performance of the stories by reading the
booklet texts.

Mico the Magician
INTRODUCTION
(A lion's roar is heard, then a tiger's, and the Lion appears from the right).
(Another tiger's roar is heard, and the Tiger appears from the left).
(They begin a dance of friendship, clap their hands (index finger with thumb), turn around,
pat each other on the back, turn around again, look at each other, draw close as if
embracing and the music stops).
TIGER. Hello, Mane.
LION. Hello, Claw. What's new today?
TIGER. The weather is splendid.
LION. That I can see. Something new, Claw, something new.
TIGER. They say in the Jungle that Mico is on holiday with his circus and that he's coming to
spend it here as he does every year.
LION. Good news, Claw. That way we'll have some fun this summer. We'll
tease him, it's great fun, winter is boring without him.
TIGER. Your roars frighten the whole jungle, especially Mico, he trembles like a
leaf when he hears you. Hahaha!
LION. (Roaring) Yes. They're all afraid of me (growling).
(They have fun growling, exiting to the left).
(Animal voices offstage. Hello Mico, welcome home)
(Mico enters on the right hand).
MICO. Hello children, I live at the circus, do you like the circus? (Interaction)
So do I, but all those performances and rehearsals wear me out. I missed
the vines, the palm trees, the sounds of the jungle. I'm very glad to be on
holiday here, after so much work.
(The Tiger appears from the left).
TIGER. Hello Mico, you're back, I was just talking with Mane about your return and
how much fun we have when you're here.
MICO. (To the audience) Goodness! I hope Mane won't pester me too much, I
know his idea of fun, even though I've taken my precautions.
TIGER. What work did you do? Monkey business, as usual? Hahaha!
MICO. Yes, mock all you like, but now I'm a magician, Mico-the-Great-Magician.
TIGER. You do magic, YOU?
MICO. Indeed, a great magician taught me, the Wizard of Oz.
TIGER. Haha, that's a good one. Right, I'm off to drink at the pond, I'm all dry from talking
so much.
MICO. (to the audience) Now's when he'll go dry, you'll see.

(The Monkey rubs his pocket three times and each time little bells are heard tinkling,
he claps his hands and at the same time a cymbal sounds and below appears a
glass of water (optional)).
MICO. Here's some water, tell me if it's cool enough.
TIGER. (Astonished, he looks this way and that and asks the audience) Who did that? you?
(Pointing at a child) did you give him this water? (Interaction)
MICO. (Patting the Tiger's back) It's my magic.
TIGER. Of course, then do your magic again and make a giraffe steak appear.
MICO. Calm down, Claw, what do you think? Magic isn't for satisfying
whims, it's much more serious, come and I'll explain.
(They exit together to the right).
(The Lion appears from the left, holding a rope to which a banana is tied, hanging over the
stage (optional)).
LION. I'll give Mico a little welcome surprise, I'll put this banana here and when
he goes to take it... haha! Plus I've set up a fake vine for him. I think someone's coming, I'll
go and hide behind these bushes.
(He hides behind the left-hand curtains).
(Mico enters from the right).
MICO. That's odd, I haven't run into Mane yet. Oh, what a fine banana! (he
looks at it and shows it) We don't have any like this at the circus, did you see that? (He
goes up to take it when he hears a terrifying roar, he jumps and
steps back. The Lion appears, in stitches).
LION. Haha, I've missed being able to laugh like this so much, hahaha.
MICO. Very funny, but he who laughs last laughs longest.
LION. And what will you do? Leap from tree to tree as usual?
MICO. Yes, you see. I'm leaving, because if I stay here, anything
could happen. (He grabs the vine and falls, the sound of his fall and his groans are heard).
LION. (laughing) Hahaha, I'm brilliant, hahaha, what a shame Claw missed that, I'm going to
tell him right away, hahaha,
MICO. Where are you off to in such a hurry?
LION. Do you want more, haven't you had enough?
MICO. The one who hasn't yet got what he deserves is you, (to the audience) but he's going to
get it. (To the lion) Mane, you may not know that I'm a magician.
LION. Claw told me that, but what can you do to me, turn me into a bear? (He goes off laughing
to the left).
MICO. (To the audience) Good idea, we'll have a good laugh seeing a forest bear here in the
jungle.
(Mico rubs his pocket three times and each time little bells are heard tinkling, he claps his
hands and at the same time a cymbal sounds).
(The lion comes back from the left, turned into a bear but he doesn't realise it).
LION BEAR. Mico! What are you going to turn me into again? It's to tell Claw, I don't
remember anymore.
MICO. Hahaha. (He exits the stage to the right).

LION BEAR. (to the audience) What's the matter with him? He must have hit his head. Ah, here comes
Claw, he'll have a good laugh when I tell him.
TIGER. (He growls and shows his claws as if to attack) Grrrrr. (To the audience) But
it's a bear. Hahaha! A bear! In the jungle!
LION BEAR. Come on, Claw, stop laughing. Where do you see a bear? Are you crazy?
TIGER. (to the audience) How does he know my name? (Interaction) Mane? It's not
possible. Mane has a fine mane, a long tail and huge
whiskers.
LION BEAR. Well look at my mane... my ma... (touching his head) My mane?
(looking behind) And my tail? (feeling his whiskers) And my whiskers? (Crying)
But what's happened to me?
TIGER. That won't wash, you're not Mane. When he roars, the whole jungle is
afraid. Roar, let's see.
LION BEAR. (Whimpering) I don't know if I can. (He puffs himself up and deflates twice
and finally lets out a great roar).
TIGER. Do you think that's really Mane, children? (Interaction) It must be a
trick of Mico's, did you play a nasty trick on him?
LION BEAR. (Sobbing) Yes, one or two...
TIGER. Well there you go, he worked his magic on you.
LION BEAR. But I thought his magic was all jokes.
TIGER. You see it's not. You've only got what you deserve. Now you must talk to him.
I'll go and find him. (He exits to the right).
LION BEAR. Yes, I deserved it, I always made fun of him, I'll never again play
nasty tricks on anyone, king of the jungle though I am.
(Mico appears from the right).
MICO. [clearing his throat] Ahem-ahem.
LION BEAR. (Noticing his presence) Mico, I beg your pardon, I'll never again make fun
of anyone, help me, turn me back into a lion.
MICO. I think you're truly sorry, that it's taught you a lesson and that you
won't abuse your power anymore, but it's still too soon...
(The Lion bear exits crying to the left).
MICO. What do you think? Is he truly sorry? (Audience) Shall we show him
we're kind? Yes? Then I'll turn him into a Lion, all right? (Audience) Will you help me? We
rub our tummies three times, (each time bells tinkle) one two three, and
raise our arms, (at the same time a cymbal sounds) now all together. The
tummy, one two three, raise the arms.
(The Lion appears from the left).
LION. Thank you Mico, you've freed me from the spell. (They embrace) I won't bother you ever
again.
MICO. All's well that ends well.
(Applause and end)

COW. You're still up so late? It will soon be daylight and you'll have to
do your work.

can get it back?

when the moon goes away, she puts everything back in place?

able to crow? (She exits to the right).
(The moon is removed and the sun is fixed on the backdrop).
