The Montessori box of 45 spindles is a concrete mathematical material that helps the child understand the numbers from 1 to 9 and associate each number with its corresponding quantity. It also introduces the concept of zero, as the absence of quantity. This material promotes hand-eye coordination, concentration and preparation for mathematical operations.
AIMS:
counting
formation of the number
introduction of 0
ordinal and cardinal value of the number
reinforce the idea that there are no other symbols from 0 to 9.
Montessori box of 45 spindles: a concrete material for learning numbers, counting and understanding zero.
PRESENTATION OF THE MATERIAL:
1 compartment box made up of five boxes numbered from 0 to 4
1 second compartment box made up of five boxes numbered from 5 to 9
1 basket in which there are 45 spindles
a wicker dish containing 8 rubber bands
PRESENTATION:
fetch the material from the shelf
have the child read from 1 to 9 then say in a cheerful tone "Look what we are going to do!"
say "one". Take a spindle and place it in box 1. Then say "two". Take two spindles while counting them: one, two, tie them with a rubber band, and put them in box 2. Say "three", take three spindles, count them: one, two, three, tie them with a rubber band and place them in box three
invite the child to continue himself for the other boxes. Each time the child says the number, count the spindles out loud
once he has finished, show him the zero and ask him if he knows it. Ask him what we placed in the box: nothing. Ask him to clap his hands three times, four, six, zero times.
