Mosaic

The Umayyad caliphs ruled over Islam, a new empire expanding at dazzling speed, and aimed for universal hegemony.

They chose the mosaic to adorn the monuments they had built in Damascus and Jerusalem, less for reasons of pomp than out of conformity with custom. Rather flashy, the mosaic was never synonymous with supreme luxury; on the other hand, it has always evoked an idea of paradise.
