Traditionally, the Middle Ages begin with the fall of the Roman Empire (in 476) and end in 1453 with the fall of Constantinople. This vast period, itself divided into the "Early" (up to the year 1000) and "Late" Middle Ages, was long regarded as a dark age during which the West suffered a decline of civilisation. Today these thousand years of history are recognised as the cradle of modern Europe: technical progress, the establishment of strong and sovereign states, the building of towns and the development of territories. |
