Control of Movement

Control of movement: The foundation of concentration and independence in Montessori education

At Montessori Store, we understand that control of movement is far more than a simple physical skill - it is the cornerstone of a child's harmonious development. Our selection of Montessori materials specially designed to refine movement subtly prepares your child for self-mastery, deep concentration and independence in every area of life.

Why is control of movement essential?

Maria Montessori identified movement as one of the child's fundamental needs. Between 0 and 6 years, the child goes through a sensitive period in which they naturally seek to perfect their gestures. Our materials answer this innate thirst for precision and coordination.

The three levels of control of movement

1. Gross motor movements (2-3 years)

  • Developing balance and general coordination
  • Preparing for walking and controlled movement
  • Awareness of the body in space

2. Fine motor skills (3-5 years)

  • Refining the pincer grip
  • Precise hand-eye coordination
  • Control of pressure and direction

3. Intentional movements (5-7 years)

  • Complex movement sequences
  • Adapting the gesture to a specific goal
  • Integration of movement and thought
